Had I written this in Germany, I would have the Personalrat, the public sector union, probably any other union, the Socialdemocrats and half a dozen media outlets all over me.

Sure, the guy might be somewhat of a jerk, but I think it is true that if you want to be in academia, you have to burn for this stuff, you never quite stop doing research, even in your sleep. So, don’t do it if you want a 9 to 5 job and enjoy the beer gardens too much.
